01

Check and prepare the wall

The surface must be free of dust and grease. Check the wall for unevenness and moisture. If the substrate is damp, the cause of the moisture must be eliminated before installation. Observe the adhesive manufacturer's instructions. We recommend priming the wall with a suitable deep primer beforehand.

Tools for installing Vario reclaimed wood wall panels
02

Prepare the work area

Cover the floor. Prepare a saw, measuring tool, spatula, pencil, paper or cloth for adhesive residue and a utility knife. Unpack the Vario cartons, pre-sort the wood and open the adhesive.

03

Apply adhesive and fix the boards

Apply assembly adhesive to the wall with a notched trowel or directly to the board. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions. Press the board firmly against the wall and hold it briefly. Slightly warped boards may need to be held longer until the adhesive grips.

04

Fill gaps, holes and chipped areas

If gaps occur between individual boards, they can be filled afterwards. Cut a suitable piece from an offcut with a sharp knife and press it into the gap. Holes or chipped areas can be repaired in the same way.

05

Leave an expansion gap

Leave at least 1 cm of clearance to the floor, ceiling and side walls for a room height of approximately 2.4 m. This allows the wood to move slightly as it balances with the room humidity.

Expert answers

Vario wall cladding – expert answers

Practical answers based on the way we install and handle Vario wall cladding.

Which adhesive is suitable for Vario wall cladding?

We recommend a water-free, flexible assembly adhesive based on polymers. This avoids introducing unnecessary moisture into the wood and supports a stable installation.

Why should water-based adhesive be avoided with Vario?

Water-based adhesives can add moisture back into the wood. Thin wooden elements react more strongly to changes in moisture, so a water-free polymer adhesive is the safer choice for dimensional stability.

Can Vario be glued directly onto wallpaper?

We do not recommend it. The wood may bond to the wallpaper, but the wallpaper itself can detach from the wall beneath it. The substrate should therefore be stable, clean, dry and capable of carrying the load.

Does Vario need to acclimatise before installation?

Yes. If possible, store the cartons flat in the room for 1–2 days before installation. This allows the wood to adjust to the room climate before it is fixed permanently.

How much edge clearance should be left when installing Vario?

For a room height of around 2.4 m, leave at least about 1 cm at the floor, ceiling and side walls. This gives the natural wood enough room to react to normal changes in indoor humidity.
